This paper consists of two parts. We analyse “Vodaregh,” a fairy-tale found in the Iranian-language folklore of Central Asia, particularly in Tajik and Shughnani. In Part 1, we offer a comparative description of the structural features of the story’s plot and narrative strategies, drawing on the Tajik and Shughnani versions of the story. We examine the set of key motifs, minor plot developments and cast of characters from a historical-typological perspective. The Shughnani text of the fairy-tale is provided as an appendix to Part 1, together with a Russian translation by the author of the present article.
